SPb ETU with its strategic development program became a winner in a competition organized by the Board of Education of the Russian Federation. Our University is recommended as a coordinator of educational activities in Russian national nanotechnological network.
SPb ETU made a contract with big Russian corporations "ROSNANO" and "Vega" for co-producing monocrystals of silicium hybrids.
The most significant results were achieved by scientists from SPb ETU in the field of radioelectronics, information and telecommunication technologies, information-control systems, as well as in life sustenance technologies, safety and resistance to terrorism, environment protection and industry of nanosystems and materials.

It was in ETU where:
- The oldest higher educational institution of electrical engineering in Europe (since 1886).
- Russian scientific school of Electrical Engineering was founded in 1894 by I.I. Bergman.
- In 1901-1908 the educational system of Radio Engineering was developed. It was Alexander Popov, the inventor of radio, who laid the basis for the system of education "in the area of radio". He became the first elected director of the ETI. The Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE) mounted a Milestone Plaque on the premises of ETU (2005) as recognition of Popov's contribution to the development of wireless communication.
- Most of the Russian scientific schools in Electric Communication, Electrical Engineering, Electroenergetics, High-voltage Technology and Electric Power Transmission were founded at ETU.
- In 1899 the Department of Electrical Machinery was opened by A.A. Voronov. It gave Russia specialists who were in the highest rank among scholars in the area of Electrical Machinery.
- The first chair of Radio Engineering in Russia was established by the alumni Professor Imant G. Freiman (1917). It appeared to be the basis for the successful development of the Russian scientific school in this field that has been witnessing an ever increasing relevance.
- The following chairs were established here for the first time in the world: Electric Drive by Professor Sergey A. Rinkevich (1922); Electroacoustics and Ultrasonic Testing by Professor Sergey Ya. Sokolov (1931); High-frequency Electrothermy by Professor Valentin P. Vologdin (1935).
- Professors and lecturers from ETU took part in development of electrification plans of Russia. As far back as in 1910 the project of the first Russian hydroelectric power station – Volchovskaya HPP (G.O. Graftio). Besides, scientists from ETU worked on the first in Russia projects of thermal electric power stations, powerful hydroelectric and heat generators, unique electrical drives. Professor Genrikh O. Graftio supervised the State plan for electrification of Russia – 'GOELRO' (1920s).
- Russian scientific school of Electrochemistry was founded. The scientists from ETU produced the first "Russian" aluminium using industrial electrochemical method. Thus, the foundation of native electrometallurgy was laid.
- The largest in Europe laboratory of high-voltage engineering was founded in1920 by A.A. Smurov.
- The first in Russia Department of Electromedical Apparatus was opened in 1962 by A.I. Berg.
- Training of specialists in the area of Automatics, Computer Science and Electronics was started in the middle of the 1930s.
- The first in the world Department of Electroacoustics was opened in 1931 by S.Y. Yakovlev.
- ETU scientists’ works in the area of Ultrasonic Defectoscopy and Electroacoustics, as well as Induction Hardening of Metals and High-Frequency Electrothermy had the world acknowledge.
- After the WW II ETU started intensive development of new scientific fields: Radio Electronics and Telecommunications, Automatics and Telemechanics, Computer Science and Opto Electronics.
- In 1946 the Department of Dielectrics and Semiconductors started to work (N.P. Bogoroditsky). Nowadays researches of Radio material continue to be conducted in the field of Micro- and Nano-Technologies.
- Many graduates from ETU took part in development of the North Pole, worked on acoustic methods of ice cover measuring, made researches on the polar stations of Arctican regions and Antarctic (1950-1960).
- ETU scientists laid a foundation of Nuclear Spectrometry and created equipment for space researches, particularly they made testing system for work of cosmonauts in agravic state (in the beginning of 1960-s).
- In 1993 International Symposium on Electromagnetic Compatibility was organised on the basis of ETU.
- ETU is the first technical University in Russia with Faculty of Humanities opened in 1989. These days Faculty of Humanities in ETU is one of the largest one in Saint-Petersburg.
- In 1999 Faculty of Economics and Management was opened in ETU. The subdepartment of management and quality systems was formed in 2000. It was one of the first in Russia to train people in the field of quality management.
- In spring 2009 Department of Economics and Management celebrated its 10th anniversary. Today this Department is developing rapidly and considered to be a leader in quality management in Russia.
- A prototype of a phased-array antenna for radar applications was elaborated by the team of Professor Yury Ya. Yurov for the first time in the world (1955).
- A unique test complex for spacemen to work in the state of weightlessness was designed (early 1960s).
- A method of sublimation growth, which is nowadays widely used all over the world for manufacturing SiC boules and became known as the LETI method, was elaborated (1976).
- The first Center for Innovations Commercialization in the former USSR was established (1991).
- Professor Zhores I. Alferov, a graduate and the former Chair of the Optoelectronics Department of ETU, was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics jointly with Herbert Kroemer "for basic work on information and communication technology", especially "for developing semiconductor heterostructures used in high-speed- and opto-electronics" (2000).
- The R&D Magazine Award '100 Most Technologically Significant New Products of the Year 2001' (USA) for the development of an electrically scanned antenna based on ferroelectrics 'DrWiN' made by the staff of the Physical Electronics Department of ETU together with the American National Renewable Energy Laboratory and Paratek Microwave Inc.
- Grand Prix of St. Petersburg Technical Fair, 'The Best Innovation Project and the Best Research Development of the Year 2010' for the development of the first national portable digital X-ray diagnostic complex.
- The Gold medal of the IV Civilization Forum 'Development Prospects and Civilizations Partnership Strategy' in the frames of World Exhibition 'EXPO-2010' (China) awarded for the development of the portable digital X-ray diagnostic complex for medical applications.
In 2007, ETU became one of the 57 best Russian universities (one of the 24 universities of technology) which won the national bid in the scope of the National Project on Innovations in Education. During the implementation of the Project in 2007-2009, more than 738 million roubles (around 18M EUR) were invested in ETU by the Russian Government, to purchase and implement state-of-the-art equipment, which is mostly unique for the country. A major modernization resulted in a significant increase of the University R&D budget in 2007-2012, amounting to more than 800 million roubles (around 20M EUR) last year.
ETU constantly works on technical forecast within the high-priority directions of its development. The created forecast system is based on the research conducted and the attraction of expert bodies for the assessment of current state and development prospects.
In 2012, ETU and 54 further Russian universities (22 universities of technology) won the national bid on implementation of their Strategic Development Programmes for 2012-2016. In a very early phase of the Strategic Development Program implementation, ETU already established two Centers of Excellence for generation and dissemination of new knowledge on emergent technologies. The priority directions of the University Centers of Excellence are 'Nano, bio, information and cognitive technologies' as well as 'Terrorism counteraction and public safety'.
