Signal for Health: Summer School on Bioengineering Systems at ETU

International students have studied signal processing methods for biomedical engineering at the international online summer school at ETU "LETI."

From July 6 to July 19, the fourth summer school on Biomedical Systems and Technologies dedicated to the design and development of technical systems for healthcare, as well as the basics of processing and analysis of medical data, took place at ETU "LETI." This year, the program was held online for the first time.

Students from Italy and Iraq took part in the program. Leading experts of the Department of Bioengineering Systems gave lectures to the students; the program coordinator is Yulia Bobrova, a senior lecturer of the department.

This year, a new summer school program titled "Introduction into Biomedical Signal Processing and Analysis" was prepared at the Department of Bioengineering Systems. This course is designed for students who want to learn basic signal processing methods and their applications in biomedical engineering. The program provides students with knowledge in such methods of signal processing as digitization, filtration, spectral and correlation analysis as applied to ECG and EEG processing and analysis. The course focuses on practical aspects of the topic with a large number of examples for each method studied in MATLAB.

"Due to the transition to distance learning and the closure of state borders, we have no opportunity to hold a school traditionally. Fortunately, professors were able to adapt and successfully conducted lectures and practical classes remotely for students from other countries. We hope for the soonest improvement of the situation in the world, and we will take into account and apply the experience we have gained while conducting the school online when organizing future similar events."

Students of the program learned the basics of digital filtration and digital signal processing, studied spectral analysis and adaptive digital filters, learned how to detect events in biomedical signals and apply signal processing in electrocardiography and electroencephalography.

"Students will be able to apply the principles of signal processing in their research and training projects related to the development of software for devices, systems, and complexes for biomedicine. Passing the course allowed the students to better understand modern trends in information technologies and the prospects for their use in biology and medicine," Yulia Bobrova said.

The summer school received positive feedback from the participants:

"I just want to say thank you to the organizers for everything. I learned a lot in my field - biomedical engineering - at this beautiful summer school. MATLAB is very useful both in Simulink and programing all the medical devices. I hope to get another course in the future in Saint Petersburg."

After the summer school, students will be able to apply for full-time study in the master's program "(Systems and Technologies in Digital Healthcare (in the field of Biomedical Engineering)," which focuses on developing professional expertise in students and teaching them to operate modern devices and systems for examining chronically ill patients, as well as to carry out research while developing new health monitoring systems. Students will receive in-depth training in electronics, information systems, biomedical signal recording and processing, automated image analysis, application of artificial intelligence and Data Science for processing medical big data.

"During the summer school on Biomedical Systems and Technologies, we aim to find out the topics that are of the greatest interest for bachelors and masters of foreign universities. This activity undoubtedly brings its fruits. We offer new academic modules, disciplines, master's programs that are in demand abroad. Over the past three years, we have opened new master's programs "Systems and Technologies in Digital Healthcare," "High-Tech Medical Systems and Complexes," which we implement in Russian and English. Students from universities in Italy, Austria, Germany, and Central Asian countries have shown interest in these programs, and universities in these countries offer us to organize a network program. After some time we will likely have foreign partner universities, with which we will implement the double degree programs and academic mobility projects."
