LETI will investigate diamonds
Diamond Research laboratory under the guidance of American professor James E. Butler was open on Tuesday, October 15th, at the Saint Petersburg State Electrotechnical University “LETI”.
Diamond Research laboratory under the guidance of American professor James E. Butler was open on Tuesday, October 15th, at the Saint Petersburg State Electrotechnical University “LETI”. The laboratory is aimed at developing technologies of growing semiconductor films of diamonds and the prototypes of devices based on achievements in this area.
The research team of laboratory includes two candidates of sciences, three graduate students, three students who are currently studying at “LETI”, and also scientists of the Institute of Applied Physics of the Russian Academy of Sciences (Nizhniy Novgorod city). The head of the group of scientists is a famous American professor James E. Butler, a recognized authority in physical and chemical analysis of a diamond surface.
“Diamond is much more interesting and valuable to society not as the most expensive jeweler stone, but as the owner of unusual physical characteristics. It possesses a huge potential in technical application due to the unique hardness, heat conduction and optical transparency. It is an unusual material for quantum photonics and quantum computer devices. It is a dielectric, but as the material represents a unique opportunity to develop on its basis semiconductor devices for high-frequency electronics of big capacities”, - said prof. J. Butler.
The realization of this project became possible due to a victory in the state grant competition organized in order to support scientific research projects conducted under the guidance of Russian leading scientists.
