LETI - NTU (Singapore): mutual interest and prospects for cooperation

ETU "LETI" continues to establish contacts with the world's major universities with a view to the mutual enrichment of knowledge of students and improve awareness of our university abroad. In the near future, one of the best educational institutions in Asia will become the new partner of ETU "LETI".

On August 1, a familiarization visit of the delegation of Nanyang Technological University (Singapore) to St. Petersburg Electrotechnical University "LETI". The parties agreed to hold the meeting in March this year at the 12th annual conference of the Asia-Pacific Association for International Education (APAIE) - the main event of the Asia-Pacific region, dedicated to the current trends in research and educational mobility. The forum was very successful for LETI: during the exhibition, more than 70 universities from all over the world showed interest in summer schools and master's programs of the university.

The delegation from Singapore to LETI was led by the Director of Office of Global Education and Mobility Lalit Goel and Assistant Manager of Student and Academic Services Department Kate Ang. From the side of ETU "LETI" at the meeting there were Vice-Rector for Research Dmitrii Gaivoronskii, head of the International Student Office Renat Yalyshev and specialist of the Department of International Academic Mobility Oksana Isaeva.

At the beginning of the meeting, Dmitrii Gaivoronskii spoke about the history and present of the ETU "LETI", listed the faculties and key areas of scientific research. Dmitrii Gaivoronskii also said that within the framework of the implementation of the roadmap for Project 5-100, LETI is making active efforts to internationalize scientific and educational activities and develop academic mobility, which is an essential condition for increasing the international competitiveness of the university and responding to the challenges of globalization.

In response, Lalit Goel talked about his country, about infrastructure, research and development strategy of Nanyang Technological University (NTU), where more than 33,000 students study from 90 countries. NTU specializes in scientific and engineering education, it also includes colleges of natural, humanities and social sciences, a business school, a medical school and a school of communication. Each year NTU implements more than 50 joint educational programs with the world's leading universities. Annually the University carries out over 1800 exchange programs, and also organizes internships for its students in universities and enterprises from 45 countries. At the moment, for NTU, Russia is one of the least embraced countries in terms of academic mobility, so Lalit Goel expressed the hope that it is from the LETI the exchange of students between the two countries will be more active.

"We are very pleased that we held talks with representatives of the university, which is highly rated in the world: NTU holds 11th place in the QS World University Rankings and 54th in the Times Higher Education rating. Singapore and NTU thanks to newest developments, high technologies, and developed infrastructure can play an important role in the professional development of future specialists from LETI. Therefore, we are interested in sending our students there, and also are ready to conduct summer schools on the basis of LETI for NTU students".

In the course of the meeting, points of contact between higher education establishments were outlined. ETU "LETI" is ready to receive Singaporean students in professional summer schools in the areas of "Biomedical Systems and Technologies" and "Computer Technologies and Methods of Knowledge Extraction", in summer schools of the Russian language for foreign students, as well as in the summer school of the Faculty of Economics and Management, which development will begin in autumn. And Vice-Rector in Research Dmitrii Gaivoronskii stressed that the university is interested in establishing scientific cooperation with colleagues from Singapore and organizing joint scientific research. In turn, Nanyang University of Technology offers ample opportunities for LETI students to participate in short-term educational programs and internships.

The parties agreed on the continuation of the negotiation process. The project will be exchanged in the near future by e-mail. Lalit Goel invited representatives of LETI to take part in the Days of Partners of NTU, which will be held on September 5-6. The next round of negotiations on cooperation between ETU "LETI" and Nanyang Technological University (NTU) will be held within the framework of the conference of the European Association for International Education, which will be held from 12 to 15 September 2017 in Seville.
