International Students Will Be Able to Work during Their Studies in Russia
To find a full-time job in Russia, international students of ETU "LETI" will only need a certificate from the university.
On August 5, the Federal Law No. 16-FZ "On Amendments to the Federal Law “On the Legal Status of Foreign Citizens in the Russian Federation” regarding the simplification of the procedure for employment in the Russian Federation of students of Russian professional and higher education institutions for foreign citizens and stateless persons" came into force.
Employers will be able to hire international students, who are studying full-time at colleges and universities in educational programs with state accreditation, without a work permit or patent. Students will be able to work in any free time, even outside the Russian region in which they study.
Before this law, international students had the right to work without a work permit or patent only during holidays or in entities and partnerships established by the institutions in which they study. For example, in July 2020, international students were employed at ETU "LETI" under the Program to Promote the Employment of Students of St. Petersburg Universities of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education. These are 71 people from Kazakhstan, Belarus, Moldova, Ukraine, Turkmenistan, and Kenya.
"For the education system and our country in general, these changes are very important. We have been waiting for these decisions for a long time at ETU "LETI." Australia, a country that is a world leader in exports of educational services, can serve as a benchmark in this matter, and its example shows that the employment opportunity plays not the least role in choosing a country for education. I hope that this simplification will add competitive advantages to Russian education and help our international students feel even more comfortable."
Now, to conclude a contract with an employer, students will only need to provide a certificate from a university (college) confirming that they are studying in Russia. In this case, the employer will not need to obtain permission to hire foreign workers. After the end of the studies, the contract must be terminated.
