On June 11-13, the annual EduData Summit 2019, a forum on the use of data in education, took place at the British Museum in London. Quacquarelli Symonds (QS), the British ranking agency, organized the summit. Over 300 delegates from 42 countries and 120 organizations attended the event, 5 of which were from Russia, including two from St. Petersburg - St. Petersburg Electrotechnical University "LETI" and Peter the Great St.Petersburg Polytechnic University.

The summit program included reports from strategists, data scientists, CIOs from educational organizations, which allowed discussing best practices at the interface of such areas as big data, predictive analytics, learning analytics, and education. 30 speakers presented their reports at the conference, including a representative of ETU "LETI" - Anna Glazova, Deputy Head of the International Academic Mobility Department.

Anna Glazova took part in the panel session called “Influencing the student journey: how using data to segment and create profiles of students can inform recruitment and institutional strategies.” Her presentation on the topic “Analysis of enrollee and freshmen data as a key factor of student recruitment planning” caused a lively response from an international audience.

“Everyone came to the conclusion that a development strategy is necessary. All decisions that concern university management should be based on data. Yes, any statistics is a model of some kind, and the model is inaccurate. But having a model is always better than not having one.”

For the ETU "LETI" representative, the session was not only a meeting place with long-time partners of the university but also an opportunity to establish new contacts: along with representatives from QS; Brandfinity, the Swiss digital marketing agency; and the University of San Francisco de Quito (Ecuador), the event was attended by specialists of analytical department of the Czech Technical University in Prague, which has been cooperating with ETU "LETI"  for many years.

Traditionally, the summit has become a platform for establishing links with educational organizations from around the world: Anna Glazova conducted more than 20 negotiations, some of which resulted in concrete steps to establish strong partnerships.

On June 13, a QS Ranking Summit seminar took place as part of the forum. Representatives of the QS ranking agency spoke about the features of the rating methodology, the prospects for its development and the benefits for universities participating in such ratings of educational organizations. This event included a one-to-one half-hour consultation from a member of the QS ranking team, who, based on the existing results of the university, gave advice and recommendations on current ratings and how to maximize the potential of the university using this data. Among the common problems of Russian universities, experts highlighted the low level of internationalization.

EduData Summit (EDS) is the world's premium forum for data-driven educators. The focus is on the opportunities and challenges of using data and analytics, as well as their impact on higher education. The next event will take place at United Nations Headquarters in New York.
