Designed at ETU: from a car-like robot to an unmanned GAZelle car
ETU-based developers are promising to design an unmanned GAZelle car by 2019.
Gorkovsky Avtomobilny Zavod (GAZ) and “Volnoe Delo” Oleg Deripaska Foundation presented ETU with a GAZelle NEXT car for rebuilding into an unmanned vehicle on July 2nd, 2018. The ETU team was rewarded with such a prize for success at the PROFEST-2018 All-Russian Technology Festival – the biggest European event devoted to robotics and high tech. Our team was called MadDrive and consisted of students and young employees of the Department of Automatic Control Systems. The team assumed the third place in the AutoNet 18+ category.
The car presented to the university will be used for new R&D at the Department of Automatic Control Systems. The researchers are planning to reconstruct the GAZelle into an unmanned vehicle by 2019 and later use it for field testing of unmanned robotic systems. A team of experienced developers who specialize in mobile robotics will transform the vehicle with the help of Denis M. Filatov, Assistant Professor, Candidate of Science.
The car will be equipped with machine vision and artificial intelligence and will be able to traverse a distance autonomously, maneuver and react to changing circumstances. Mostly Russian parts and ETU-developed algorithmic and software decisions, and design were utilized while implementing the project.
