The XI International Conference on Informatics in Schools (ISSEP-2018) will be held at St. Petersburg Electrotechnical University "LETI" from 9 to 12 October 2018.

ISSEP (International Conference on Informatics in Schools: Situation, Evolution and Perspectives) is an authoritative forum for researchers and practitioners in the field of school informatics. The conference provides teachers and researchers with an opportunity to discuss the goals and objectives of teaching informatics, curricula, current educational and methodological problems, as well as the latest trends in the use of informatics in everyday life.

ISSEP has been held in different countries - it was hosted by Austrian Klagenfurt (2005), Vilnius (2006), Torun (2008), Zurich (2010), Bratislava (2011), Oldenburg (2013), Istanbul (2014), Ljubljana (2015), Münster (2016) and Helsinki (2017).

Since 2005, the conference is taking place in Russia for the first time. St. Petersburg Electrotechnical University "LETI" was chosen as the venue for the program committee.

Scientists and school teachers from 20 countries will gather at the university including Russia, Austria, Ecuador, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iran, Israel, Italy, Japan, Kazakhstan, Lithuania, Netherlands, Norway, Saudi Arabia, Slovakia, South Africa, Sweden, Switzerland, Uruguay. The working language of the conference is English.

The Chairperson of the conference is Valentina Dagiene, Professor at the Faculty of Mathematics and Informatics of Vilnius University (Lithuania), founder of the International Competition on informatics for School Children BEBRAS (“Beaver”); Co-Chairman of the conference is Sergey Pozdnyakov, Doctor of Pedagogic Sciences, Professor of the Department of Algorithmic Mathematics of St. Petersburg Electrotechnical University "LETI".

Among the conference participants are Russian and international experts in the field of pedagogy and methods for teaching informatics at school: Lyudmila Bosova, doctor of pedagogical sciences, author of teaching materials for the course “Informatics and ICT” for primary school; Konstantin Polyakov, Doctor of Technical Sciences, the author of the teaching materials for computer science for primary and high school; Sergey Beshenkov, doctor of pedagogic sciences, professor, chief researcher of the Institute of Educational Management of the Russian Academy of Education; Gerald Futschek, Director of the Institute for Information Systems, TU Wien (Austria); Ivan Kalash, Head of the Department of Informatics Teaching at Comenius University (Bratislava, Slovak Republic).

A special session for teachers “Teacher's Day” will be organized within the framework of the ISSEP conference, to which 250 teachers of elementary, middle and high schools from various regions of Russia and Kazakhstan will be invited there. The session will be held on October 9 in the format of plenary talks, seminars and master classes on various aspects of the organization of the educational process in informatics. The main issues to be considered are the following: providing quality education in the field of informatics for students of all ages; integration of informatics lessons into students' everyday life, interdisciplinary courses and projects; computer tools in teaching and learning informatics, multimedia technologies, web technologies; questions of teaching methods, pedagogical methods, ways of studying the subject, student motivation, class management, etc.

Co-organizers of the “Teacher's Day” are BINOM. Knowledge Laboratory; St. Petersburg Academy of Postgraduate Pedagogical Education and "Leningrad Regional Institute for the Development of Education."

The primary department organizing the conference at St. Petersburg Electrotechnical University "LETI" is the Department of Algorithmic Mathematics of the Faculty of Computer Science and Technology.

“LETI devotes targeted efforts to continuous training of specialists in the field of informatics starting with popular contests and Olympiads and ending with scientific work under the guidance of internationally recognized scientists. The creation of the Department of Algorithmic Mathematics in 2018 became a landmark event that showed a high level of staff capacity of the university both in the pedagogical and scientific fields. The university is implementing a plan for the development of computer mathematics, developed with the participation of a world-famous researcher Bruno Buchberger, who visited LETI three years ago. The Faculty now successfully operates the Laboratory of Algorithmic Mathematics under the direction of Nikolai Nikolayevich Vasiliev, researcher of the Institute of Physics and Mathematics of the Russian Academy of Sciences”.

Mikhail Kupriyanov, Dean of the Faculty of Computer Science and Technology of St. Petersburg Electrotechnical University "LETI".

For reference

St. Petersburg Electrotechnical University "LETI" provides students with bachelors, specialists and masters courses in the field of computer science: "Computer Science and Computing", "Information Systems and Technologies", "Applied Mathematics and Computer Science", "Computer Security".

A scientific and pedagogical school has emerged at LETI in the field of teaching school mathematics and informatics since the late 1970s. The founder of the school, academician of the Russian Academy of Education, head of the department of higher mathematics at LETI Mark Bashmakov developed a range of textbooks in mathematics for secondary schools and secondary vocational education. His student, Doctor of Pedagogical Sciences Sergey Pozdnyakov, is developing a new direction - computer support for the productive teaching of mathematics and informatics.

The development of software products for educational purposes and digital teaching materials, new technologies for teaching mathematics and computer science are being developed as part of the activities of the Center for Computerization of Education (established in 1993). The magazine "Computer Tools in Education" (included in the list of scientific journals by the Higher Attestation Commission of Russia) has been published since 1998.

The journal founded a distance contest for schoolchildren titled as “Design, Explore, Optimize” in 2004. Participants are engaged in experimental research activities during solving problems built on computer models of new ideas from different subject areas related to mathematics and informatics.

The Center for Computerization of Education at St. Petersburg Electrotechnical University "LETI" has been the representative of the International Competition in Informatics BEBRAS ("Beaver") in Russia since 2012, in which about 2 million students from 65 countries take part annually. The number of participants in Russia reached 30 thousand in 2017.

St. Petersburg Electrotechnical University "LETI" initiated a contest in discrete mathematics and theoretical computer science in 2013, which was included in the list of the Russian Council of School Olympiads and is held annually at the site of St. Petersburg Electrotechnical University "LETI".
