Department of Microelectronics and Radio Engineering

The Department of Microelectronics and Radio Engineering was established in 1967 by the merger of the Department of Radio Equipment Design and Production and the Department of Microelectronics.

The Department of Radio Equipment Design and Production was organized at LETI in 1945, simultaneously with the Faculty of Radio Engineering on the initiative of Academician Axel Berg. It was the first department in the USSR to train specialists in the design of structures and technologies of radio-electronic equipment, which played a leading role in creating academic schools in this field.

For many years, the department has been a base for the advanced training of teachers of related departments from other universities in the country.

The department has 7 educational laboratories and several research groups. The department trains bachelors and masters in the program "Design and Technology of Electronic Facilities," and since 2011, in the program "Construction and Technology of Electronic Facilities." In the specialty "Radio Electronic Systems and Complexes," the department trains qualified engineers in the program "Design and Technology of Radio Electronic Systems and Complexes."

Teachers and researchers of the department stood at the origins of new fundamental and applied fields – microelectronics, computer-aided design systems of radio-electronic equipment, microwave electronics, and space instrumentation. The scientific and practical results they received largely determined the high level of development of equipment in these and related fields, as well as contributing to the training of highly qualified specialists.

The research conducted at the department at the present time is related to solving the problems of microwave microelectronics, nanotechnology, and automation of the design of structures and technologies of radio-electronic equipment.
